This page outlines how images should be used and managed on the Dan and Phil Wiki (DnPW). Following these guidelines helps keep pages consistent, accessible, and compliant with copyright and fair use policies. == General principles == * Use images only when they add context or clarity to an article. * Each image should have a clear purpose, such as identifying a subject, illustrating an event, or showing a design element. * Avoid cluttering articles with unnecessary or repetitive images. * All images must follow fair use and copyright rules. * All images uploaded to [[commons:Main Page|Wikimedia Commons]] can be directly used on this wiki. ** To use a Commons image, copy and paste the file name from Commons into a normal file link. This only works if the file name is exactly matching what is on Commons and there is not a file uploaded to this wiki with the same file name. ** Example: <nowiki>[[File:Daniel_howell_2018_dapg.png|thumb|Daniel Howell, 2018]]</nowiki> produces the image to the right. [[File:Daniel_howell_2018_dapg.png|thumb|Daniel Howell, 2018]] == File naming == * Use descriptive, concise filenames. Example: "Dan_Howell_We’re_All_Doomed_Promo.jpg". * Do not use vague names such as "image1.png" or "photo.jpg". * Use underscores (_) instead of spaces in file names for consistency. == Uploading == * Upload only images that meet fair use or are freely licensed. * Screenshots and promotional images are acceptable if used to identify a subject, event, or work. * Avoid uploading full-resolution or high-quality promotional photos when a lower-quality version is sufficient for identification. * Do not upload images that contain personal or private information, such as home addresses or unpublicised social media content. * Avoid uploading images that are already present on [[commons:Main Page|Wikimedia Commons]]. == Image placement == * Images should be placed near the most relevant text. * Use the standard MediaWiki thumbnail format, for example: <nowiki>[[File:Example.jpg|thumb|Caption text]]</nowiki>[[File:Example.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] * The default thumbnail size should not be changed unless necessary for clarity. * Align images to the right of the page unless a specific layout requires otherwise. * Avoid placing too many images in a single section; use galleries or tables if multiple images are needed. == Captions and alt text == * Every image should include a short, informative caption. * Captions should describe the image clearly without editorial comments. Example: ''“Dan Howell during the We’re All Doomed tour.”'' * Add alt text using the standard description field when uploading files to improve accessibility. == Licensing and fair use == * When uploading, select the correct license tag (fair use, public domain, Creative Commons, etc.). * Images used under fair use should meet the following conditions: * They illustrate the subject of the article. * They are used in low resolution suitable for identification. * No free equivalent is available that would serve the same purpose. * Their inclusion does not harm the copyright holder’s ability to profit from the work. * Always credit the original source in the file description if known. == Deletion and disputes == * Administrators may remove or replace images that violate these rules or break copyright policy. * If you believe an image was removed unfairly, discuss it on the image’s talk page before re-uploading. * Repeated uploads of copyrighted or inappropriate material may result in account restrictions or blocks. == See also == [[DnPW:Style_Guide]] and [[DnPW:Rules_and_Etiquette]] for related standards on presentation and conduct.
